And, no, this isn't a thing where I pretend I have a girlfriend where I'm like, oh, no, I have many girlfriends in the Niagara Falls area and stuff like that. I'm tying it back to the breakfast club again since I just made another threat about it. And I know you don't watch movies, so you probably are like, what are you talking about with the Niagara Falls reference is, but trust me, it makes sense

So once it's out, maybe you can get her to at least listen to the podcast, but it's not out yet. I'm scheduling it with my friends. So once I record it and edit all that stuff. So I think your girlfriend would really enjoy it. And thank you. I mean, if she wants any book recommendations, I'm happy to give her recommendations, or she can throw some my way. That would be wonderful. Tell her she absolutely needs to get on

Yeah, sure. The old my girlfriend read a book? Yes. Not that I'm doubting you have a girlfriend, Joe. Just doubting that she's the one that read the books. It's okay, buddy, to admit that you can read it's 2020. It's cool now. No kidding. I'm actually reading a book every night. I read a little of it and it helps me sleep at night. It's like my bedtime story helps me have beautiful dreams

Just record conversations, wouldn't even tell them they were being recorded until they were halfway through the conversation, then would show them, and then they'd be like, oh, s***, but too late now

Poker man, I have already read Mary Trump's book. Actually, Mary Trump read her book to me because I run machines and I listen to audiobooks. And so I had to I listen to the audiobook of that. Now I'm in Bolton's Books, which I think Bolton is a scumbag piece of garbage, but I'm willing to listen to whatever kind of hijinks were going on while he was at the White House. So yeah, that's pretty much how I consume books

Yeah. You know, Shahnaz, if there was gonna be a speed bump for this platform, that will be it. People are afraid to speak, and I don't know why. What's gonna happen? You know, you're gonna get electrocuted if you didn't float quickly enough or you threw some, UMS and O's in there like I do all the time. What's going to happen? I don't know

Pokemon. How's it going? Well, I'm glad you were able to record people and all that good stuff. I feel like if I did that, someone would beat me up and I'm a really tiny little lady here, so I just don't want to get beat up by recording someone's voice, but I have heard people who have been like, my voice sounds terrible

The whole family listening to your voice for the first time, I was never, like, horrified at the sound of my voice. I just knew it was different. Like you said, it sounds different coming out and it is coming in. But when I was trying to show people like my friends around me, have them hear my voice. I'm like, Listen to this. You're going to laugh your a**. I've listened to how I sound on this recording

You all are cracking me up. So I just listened to a sample of the audiobook and then started reading more about the book. And this seems very depressing. So of course I'm really into and 100% would listen to it. So average Joe, if you do it, I'll do it

All right. I'm not listening to it this weekend, though, because be doing a bunch of stuff. But Monday, I will listen to it at work, and I'm still metal AF, so don't let anybody say anything different

I think that's what I'm supposed to be. I think I'm supposed to represent the patriarchy. So I'm going to come in here. I'm going to throw down real hard. Except from what I heard about this, I don't think can bro Rowan too hard, but I'm going to give it my best we're going to see. But yeah. All right. I'm looking forward to this challenge

Checkin’ in.

This guy is pretty creepy. I don't know. Maybe. I guess I would have figured out where it was going, even if I hadn't been given the heads up. But, yeah, this is uncomfortable, and it's hard to make me uncomfortable, but I'm feeling pretty uncomfortable. That's all I'm saying so far. I'm checking in, and I want you all to reflect on what you've done to me

I mean, poor Joe. Yes. Poor Joe. Yes, but there's a lot of reality to the situation. I mean, there is a lot of reality to this. I know of someone from whatever that something like this has happened. But thanks for checking. Good luck with the rest of the book. And I hope you enjoy being uncomfortable because you're going to get a lot more uncomfortable. All right. I'll talk to you later. Bye

I’ve finished the book. Hopefully I’m not a registry now. :(

And there's a couple of things. One now I don't know if this was in the book book, but in the audiobook there's a caveat in the beginning from the author, I guess, stating that although this mirrored timelines, things that happened in her life, that this was not her personal experiences. Apparently she left the school at the exact same time this character does. And under weird circumstances or something like that, I don't know that

What my understanding is from talking to some people is that this situation is not all too uncommon. There's a lot of realism in it. I know you thought that. Oh, no. This happened to the author for sure. How else can the author empathize with this? You know, I'm thinking about that. I really am thinking about it. And I don't know if I completely agree with you because like I said, the situation is not too uncommon

The writing is really good, it's complex, it's layered, and I think it's a great debut novel, and no wonder that it got picked up by Oprah for her reading club as well. So it's a great recommendation, and thank you so much for that

You did make a good point when you asked, what if she was the only one? Does that change the way that this comes off? No. But for her, it would not for us, but for her, it clearly would have made a difference. And it would have felt more permissible that he did this to her

Juggling books. What is dystopia?

So I completely empathize with the book juggling situation. I was like, and I'm really glad everyone here is joining in this conversation. I put this well up a month ago because I was really trying to decompress from this book. I mean, there are some books you read, and you're just like, I need to talk about this book

Having real bad fomo!!

Hey, everyone. So I have not listened to all these swells because I have not finished the book yet. I am behind on my reading because I was wrapped up in another book that bookish podcast recommended to me that I ended up loving called I was anesthesia and so now I'm going to finish this book and I had to pop in to say Hi, and I've missed you all

And then suddenly I didn't think it was great. So I'm sorry if I miscommunicated, but I'm glad you liked it, because in my book club, some people really liked it. And some of us were like, okay, it's a good book. That kind of a thing. I just couldn't get into it. But I was Anastasia. She wrote the other author. I'm talking about Aria Lawn, who wrote I was Anastasia

Lots of thoughts! @AverageJoe @bookishpodcast

And also I was impacted emotionally, but I'm okay moving forward and kind of putting it behind me. I would maybe revisit this book again to analyze the structure more from the vehicle viewpoint of a writer. But overall, I am glad I read it, and I now want to read a lot of the books that the writer has said inspired it and more about the controversy around the book as well

Also Shina, I just want to say that I'm really excited to listen to the podcast episodes about the book. So once I have a chance to listen to those, I'll definitely let you know what I think. If I have anything else to add, though I'm sure based on the Book Club episodes I've been listening to, I am sure that you all have covered any other thoughts I may have had, so I'm really excited to listen to it
