Is mask shaming acceptable

article image placeholderWoman in NoHo Trader Joe’s no-mask tirade tells her side of the story
And she had, in fact, permission from the manager at the store that she could shop without a mask. But later, I guess somebody mask shamed her, as she would say, about not wearing a mask. And that's what set off this whole incident where she felt threatened. So before I talk about this a little bit more, I want to pose the question over here. The questions is, should we be mask shaming people

Respectfully remind and educate them

So now that I post the question here on my comments, I went out and I did a little bit of medical research, didn't take much. So what I found is if you are medically advised to not not wear a mask, it usually means you are so sick and you have a lot of trouble breathing that you wouldn't be out and about shopping, let alone yell so loud. So you would essentially be home that sick

Masks signal mutual respect https://bit.ly/38eOWIg

And at a certain point, I think removing someone from a space like these employees essential workers, unfortunately, had to do is totally reasonable and necessary, since this person is potentially putting other people's lives in danger. To be completely honest, I'm just a bit at a loss. I just saw an article the other day about a bar here in Pittsburgh, where I'm living at the moment where they were not respecting social distancing rules at all. No one in the bar was wearing a mask

Fear & small businesses

Also, just one more thing I wanted to add in relation to the mass Nomass from a psychological perspective, I just think it's really interesting seeing how people's fear response is manifesting. And I mentioned the divide between mass squares and non mask wars, and I don't really like that language I use because I don't think there's actually divide. I think it's just different ways of managing fear and socially

Rant and vent... 😡😡😡

They're making a choice to do this. The other thing is, they don't believe they refuse to believe that. Some of them refuse to even believe this virus thing is a thing. So, oh, my gosh. You just got me totally like, this is like, this happened today. I apologize. I'm just livid. Yeah, right. The woman who claims she has a medical condition, I can tell you what her medical condition is

For all they know, you could be just this vindictive person who has a cough and doesn't care and just going to come in the store and potentially get them sick. So I've always done that out of respect. And I think it is the right thing to do. But if the establishment has that rule in place, then it's their right to refuse service

Misinformation on social media is the main culprit

It extremely easy to share misinformation and in the whole process work towards establishing misinformation as near facts. And I bring up those two social networks in particular because as far as I know, the people running those networks conveniently are looking the other way. While this is happening, because this sort of accurately benefits their bottom line directly and to name the Journal's point

#the indifference epidemic

Indifference to beings around us is, I think, an epidemic among humans on this planet. The Corona pandemic notwithstanding. And I think that's where the problem is, we always put ourselves first, comfort our likes and dislikes about others. And so we find ourselves aligning to political innuendos that are convenient, find excuses to indulge and stay responsible and seek attention by throwing tantrums like a three year old in a store. So it's quite possible that on the lines of what nameless?

On shaming

So I just wanted to add that into the conversation because when we say mask shaming, I think we need to be really explicit about what we're think shaming means in this context

I mask shamed someone today!!!

I have to confess that I mask Mohamed someone today. So today I was doing my weekly grocery runs. I was taking my usual precautions, had my mask on. I got my hand sanitizer in my pocket, so he decided to go get some meat from the butchers. The Butcher shop had upgraded. So cool. It's like nice big shop. I enter and I placed my order, and then I noticed all the guys behind the counter are not wearing masks

Please don't hate me

Hello, Shammi, this is York from The Poetic EarthLink evopodcast just a comment about the mask. Shaming, I think you handed yourself pretty well. I mean, it could have gotten ugly, and it didn't. So that was very good. Now I'm one of those people that I don't wear a mask. I mean, I wear it here and there. So I'm maybe your enemy. But I do wear it. When I'm on the bus

Much calmer thoughts! @shammi @york

I want to bring up a book today because it's how to make friends and influence people. It's a classic. It was published in the 19th 30s. I think it's the first chapter. I've only read this book once. This is a book I want to reread and reread. I want to study this book is just phenomenal

Oh, my God, the numbers are going to go up. And I think that pretty much sums it down to why we need to really be very careful with this virus and what we need to do, because when the numbers go up, we have seen what happens, whether it's in Italy or even in New York. It's heartbreaking to hear from doctors who have to make decisions on who lives and who doesn't live just because they are resource constraint

Analogy, a funny story, get used to it?

Like you said, Shammi, your wife is a physician. That alone. That would stress me out personally. I have another cousin whose husband is an Er Doc. I mean he's in the er. Come on. When you look at it from the perspective of the physician, that's a whole, nother ball game. Yeah, I do see patients. The good thing is, I'm a pediatric dentist. I'm only seeing the little ones so they can be carriers and things like that

So it's your energy and time doing that. So it's almost counterproductive in doing that, you're actually making people want to do what they're doing more. And that's why you're getting these huge divides because people are not addressing and listening to the actual problems, the funding, the mental problems that are causing this public health crisis in America, not so much in other countries that are more collective and cohesive and that actually take care of their citizens

So I'm going to share it here because I would love to hear people's thoughts and also you can share if you find it to be a useful tool in educating others or sharing with people who you know might need a way to think about a better way to try to to educate rather than shame, and to further explain why to them. Wearing a mask is really important. So I look forward to hearing more thoughts and thank you mystic scientists

How I see the mask shaming issue. #maskshaming #maskhole #whyyousprayspit

And so that is for my own personal health. If I see it, I don't start a fight, but I do go away from them. I will leave a restaurant if I see somebody that's working there that's not wearing a mask. I don't really see a health downfall to it, but I do see that there are places where there have been clusters of the virus, and they also seem to be places where there is a lot of not mask wearing or social distancing

There is shame being done to those who wear masks too

I think there's also a little bit of the other side shaming those that are wearing masks and constantly calling people sheep, and that follow, along with this conspiracy theory that that the masking is somehow doing something to us, and what that is depends on who is claiming that because it changes because nobody can agree on the same thing

Inform but don’t harass. @shammi

Anyway, he just contracted COVID Dwayne, the Rock Johnson, his two daughters and his wife contracted COVID. So this isn't like fantasy. This is reality. And it's so interesting. When AIDS came out right when AIDS, HIV came out, people gave tons of respect to that, like instantly. Once they heard somebody was infected, they didn't want to be within 10ft of them

Well call me crazy, but I see Karen's POV. Do I agree with it? Um ... nah.

And I have to hope that we're aware that when we do that, we're kind of lumping a whole group of people together so that they become faceless and lose their individuality and their own story. And then we can dismiss them more easily and do things like shame them. Because when I read the story and I heard that people had published her name that's called Doxing

I feel that that's actually really bad that people have lost their jobs and public shaming. Maybe that. But when people are losing their jobs and stuff over it, it's pretty bad her behavior, though. I mean, I've definitely seen worse. I saw a woman that had busted out with pepper spray and started spitting on people, although another customer drive her out of the store that was in Long Beach. But I find most of the people that are being antimask

Wow. I'm noticing an awful lot of charged reaction. There's a lot of emotion, but there's not much talk about statistics. This is a disease that that has a 99.5% recovery rate. And if you guys will remember in the first two weeks, the masks were supposed to flatten the curve so that the medical community wouldn't be overwhelmed. Well, that time has passed, and the reality is this is a COVID disease. You're going to get it at some point

The main reason I wouldn't shame anybody for wearing a mask is because I don't really think it does any good anyway, because how are people getting reinfected with covet that go round wearing a mask and get reinfected? If the mass work, then you shouldn't get reinfected at all right. So I guess nothing is
