The Handmaid’s Tale Buddy Read rules/breakdown

Okay. It's been a while since a thousand splendid songs and I think it's time to start another buddy read. I'm still behind on my reading, but I think we can at least get this started. I know a thousand splendid Suns. Split it into four parts. So for the buddy read our book Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Apwood. So join us. We're going to split it into a few parts

A suggestion @bookishpodcast

So I thought it would be really nice if we had the entire book discussion happening on one single swell, so that even when at a later time when we revisited, we have the whole thing in one place. So this is just a thought I wanted to share. So let me know what you think of it. And I would love to hear thoughts from Rachel and Srija as well. So if that sounds like something that we could try, so let's do it. Thanks again for this

You know, Ramya, I think that sounds like a splendid, like, brilliant idea. I would love to have the entire book discussion in one swell. You're right. I mean, thousands splendid songs. It just kind of four parts, and it would have been nicer to have it all together. So I'm thinking what we can do is use this. Well, this current one, the structure swell as a means of saying when we are ready for the actual Handmaid's tale swell

Another brainwave💥

That's my only concern here, because I would love to have a lot of other people joining this discussion, whether they're fans of the book or the series. Either way, it would be nice to hear a lot of perspectives on this books. So I'm just wondering what would be the best approach. Also, another idea that just popped up as I was recording this

But I got to read that book and then I've got to interview the author, and then it got all these other net galley books, and I'm just trying to keep up with everything. So I'm at a point where I feel like, okay, I can probably sneak in handmade sale. So it's like Strike Wild Iron is hot. So I think I should be able to start reading this book sometime this week, this weekend, actually. And then we'll just go from there

And I think it might make the conversation a bit more dynamic because we all will feel more free to respond and add our comments when we can as we're reading versus a more traditional like book club type model where you all have to read the book or section of the book first before you can all talk about it at the same time

@rachel

So I would still like it or prefer if this were a public discussion, like how we did with 1000 Splendid Suns. And also another thing about the idea that you suggested is that it might appear a bit random for a person who's kind of jumping in because some of us may read the book quite fast and keep leaving comments or responses as we proceed, and the others might join in. Like, say, for instance, I leave a comment on chapter 13, but you are in there

@NamelessJournal

Hey Ramya. So before I listen to the rest of your comment, I just want to say I didn't say that this should be a private conversation. I said that from doing private reads with some other people, I have realized that it's been most effective for us all to comment on whatever we like or feel passionate about, and just use the description to know what chapter is in the book that we're referencing. So no one listens ahead for any spoilers. So that's what I meant

By the time I got to part three and four and left my comments, no one really responded to me there, and I don't know if that's partially because they were in separate threads or just you all had sort of like moved on already from then. But I wonder if having it in just one place would make it a little easier to keep the conversation more dynamic, even if it's not linear. So that's just a thought and something for us to think about. Worried about spoilers and translating from TV to book

So I was trying to think of how to keep it sequential and on the same swell. And I've been thinking about it and I feel that it doesn't have to be sequential. So for example, let's talk thousands funded funds. Okay, when after we finish the book, if someone said, oh my gosh, that scene in the first part of the book where she is just married off that scene still resonates with me. Blah blah, blah, blah blah

So if we aren't too particular about the logical order or the chronological of the responses in the thread, then I think we'll all go with Rachel's idea of just adding in the description where we are and what we're talking about and keeping it all in one public. Swell. So I think that's a good idea and a very simple one. So let's just go with that. Thank you

And sorry Rachel, my bad. I just quickly skim past your reply and I guess I kind of misunderstood that you were talking about doing a private spell for this book discussion. So sorry about that. I just went back to your reply and played it out again in the regular speed, not the 1.5 X speed. And then I kind of got where I missed out that bit. So sorry about that

@RobbinMilne Welcome to join. It’s going to be a public swell 😊

I'm going to be posting it probably coming up in a few days, if not in a week. Look out for that swell that I will post. And then we will be reading this book together, as in what the plan is. So let's say I read three chapters. Then I will discuss my thoughts on it

@RobbinMilne would love for you to join us! 👍🤝

Robin, we would love to have you on our discussion. So this is open to everybody. This is not restricted to a particular reading group or a particular group of people on slow. So please feel free to to join in. We would love to have you share your perspectives here and please do share this conversation with other readers that you might know among of circles who would be interested in being a part of this discussion. So looking forward to hearing more voices in here

So for the TV thing, I would love to hear any thoughts on the TV show since I have already watched the TV show, and I think as long as people just say in the description, like TV comment or whatever, that's fine because those are definitely comments I would like to hear. And maybe for those of you who read the book and then go to the TV show later, you'd want to come back
